Are Energy Drinks Becoming Obsolete?

(An Inventor in Texas Has Dreamed Up a Cleaner Alternative)

Hero image

Energy drinks giving you jitters? Caffeine spikes and crashes? Cravings? Or maybe they just don't make a dent anymore. Thanks to an inventor in Texas who wanted a better way to get energy and focus… Now there is one.

For years, an inventor from Texas was stuck in the same cycle.

Energy drink instead of breakfast. Another with lunch. One more to power through the afternoon. One with dinner. Last one to stay productive into the wee hours. Then tossing and turning to fall asleep. Waking up feeling like a bus hit him, and needing an energy drink just to drag himself out of bed and start his day.

Energy spikes. Crashes. Cravings. Gut rot.

And what once felt like rocket fuel was barely moving the needle.

Additionally, this inventor had been using nicotine pouches, which he also wanted to quit. But he couldn't afford to lose the productivity of quitting both energy drinks AND nicotine at the same time.

Or so he thought…

He Asked Himself: Why Does Energy Have to Feel So Bad?

This question sent him down a Reddit rabbit hole researching the energy product industry. It felt rigged. Like he was doomed to a lifetime of spikes and crashes and feeling burnt out. The problem wasn't wanting energy. It was how people were getting their energy, and the lack of healthier, natural options.

He wondered: What if there were a more sustainable way to get energy with cleaner, healthier ingredients? Something without the spike - crash - crave loop? He'd done a lot of previous reading so conducted more deep research about 3 types of functional mushrooms, which he learned had been used for centuries in Eastern wellness practices for their wellness properties.

Particularly Lion's Mane for supporting thinking, memory, and overall brain function.

Cordyceps for energy and stamina. He learned a Chinese Olympic track team in the early '90s smashed a bunch of world records by changing only one thing about their regime: adding Cordyceps.

And Reishi, which he discovered, is known for its stress and sleep supportive properties.

Then something clicked. Every mushroom product he had found came in exactly the same formats: Capsules. Powders. Gummies. Soft chews. Drinks. They all depended on digestion. But he wasn't swallowing nicotine. He was using pouches.

That's when he asked the question that changed everything… What if the pouch wasn't the problem? What if the nicotine was?

Why a Pouch Format?

This Texan inventor had finally unlocked the perfect delivery method: the pouch.

Why?

Because people had been consuming these functional mushrooms orally and depending on digestion to get them the benefit-driven nutrients they wanted. But something was being lost in translation…

Nutrients were being compromised, and as a result, were not being fully absorbed due to the digestive process. He thought,

What if I were to take what I love about pouches: the habit, the taste, the mouthfeel, the delivery system buccally through the lining of the mouth… And instead of nicotine, put functional mushrooms and other naturally derived energy components in it?

Because he knew through using nicotine pouches that the effects are delivered within mere moments, and could last hours. What if he could translate that into a better-for-you pouch?

AHA. Breakthrough. Eureka. Whatever you want to call it, he felt in his gut he'd discovered something BIG. Game changing.

The Energy Drink Alternative Everyone Is Talking About

Sustainable, Crash-Free Energy Within Moments?

From this AHA moment, Flow Pouches were born.

To invent them, he combined the most widely researched and effective functional mushrooms he could get his hands on, with a patented form of theacrine (naturally derived from kucha leaves), and the most bioavailable form of Vitamin B12, methylcobalamin:

  • Lion's Mane
  • Cordyceps
  • Reishi
  • TeaCrine®
  • Vitamin B12

But just including functional mushrooms in and of themselves wasn't quite enough. He had ambitions to develop the most high quality product on the market today. So he made sure to use only 100% organic fruiting bodies. Because that's the part of the mushroom with the most beneficial nutrients.

Whereas mushrooms products that historically used mycelium-on-grain over fruiting bodies, he knew to be less effective. Mycelium is the root-like structure of the mushroom. And "on-grain" indicates it was commercially grown using a grain, such as:

  • Oats
  • Rice
  • Sorghum
  • Millet

So the mycelium grows through the grain. The problem? Many manufacturers harvest and dry the entire thing: Mycelium + grain, then they grind it into a powder and sell it as a mushroom supplement. So when people buy "1,000mg Lion's Mane," they may actually be getting a meaningful amount of grain starch instead of mushroom compounds.

Why do companies do this? Because it's easier. And cheaper. Plus most consumers don't know the difference, and brands are wise to this.

But he wasn't interested in a "me too" here today-gone tomorrow product. He was interested in something novel. Effective. Premium. Something no one had done yet.

Maybe energy drinks aren't disappearing tomorrow… But for a huge number of people, they're becoming unnecessary. Antiquated. Because once you've experienced calm energy and focus within mere moments, with none of the negative effects of nicotine and energy drinks, it's hard to imagine going back.

So if you're sick of the energy drink rollercoaster, the nasty nicotine pouch habit, and generally feeling overwhelmed and burnt out, now there just might be a better alternative.

Interesting article. I had no idea mushrooms could be delivered buccally like nicotine. Is there actual research on absorption rates through the gums vs. capsules? Would love to see the data on that.

Buccal absorption is well documented for other compounds (nicotine, some medications). The mucous membranes in your mouth bypass the digestive system entirely. Makes sense it would work for other things too.

The part about mycelium-on-grain is eye opening. I've been taking a lion's mane supplement for months and never thought to check if it's fruiting body or mycelium. Going to look at my label tonight.

I'm curious but also skeptical. "103,000+ people switched" is a big claim. Where is that number coming from? Is it verified anywhere?

I think it's based on their total customers? A lot of DTC brands track this. Not unreasonable for a product that's been around for a bit. Still, fair question.

The energy drink cycle described in this article is literally my life. Wake up, chug one, crash by 2pm, chug another, can't sleep, repeat. I didn't realize how common this pattern is. Makes me want to try something different.

Does anyone know what TeaCrine actually is? The article mentions it's from kucha leaves but I've never heard of it. Is it basically just caffeine with a different name?

It's theacrine, structurally similar to caffeine but supposedly doesn't build tolerance the same way. There are a few studies on it. It's not caffeine though, different mechanism.

I actually tried these after reading a similar article last month. Was mostly curious about the format. It's weird at first if you've never used a pouch before, but I did notice I felt more focused during work. Could be placebo, could be real. Going to keep trying for another week or two.

The Chinese Olympic team thing with Cordyceps — is that actually true? That's a wild claim to just throw in there without a source.

It's real, look up the 1993 Chinese National Games. Their coach attributed it to cordyceps and turtle blood soup. Whether it was actually the cordyceps or other factors is debated, but the story is legit.

I appreciate that this article actually explains WHY most mushroom supplements don't work (the mycelium on grain thing). I've tried lion's mane capsules twice and felt absolutely nothing. Now I'm wondering if I was basically eating rice powder.

Look, this is clearly sponsored content. But the science behind buccal delivery is sound and the ingredient list is actually clean. I've seen way worse "health" products marketed with less transparency. At least they're telling you what's in it.

My husband uses nicotine pouches and I've been trying to get him to stop. Sent him this article. He's at least open to trying an alternative which is more than I've gotten in 2 years of nagging. We'll see.

What I want to know is how long the effects actually last. Article says "up to 4 hours" but that's pretty vague. Anyone who's tried these — is it more like 1-2 hours realistically or actually 4?

For me it's about 2-3 hours of noticeable focus, then it tapers off gradually. Not a hard crash like caffeine though. I usually do one in the morning and one after lunch.

The "inventor in Texas" angle is a bit much lol. But honestly the product concept makes sense. Pouches are already a proven delivery system, just swap what's inside. Simple idea, surprised no one did it sooner.

Can someone explain the B12 thing? The article mentions methylcobalamin specifically. Is that different from the B12 in regular supplements?

Methylcobalamin is the active form your body can use directly. Most cheap supplements use cyanocobalamin which your body has to convert first. It's a real difference, not just marketing.

I spend about $200/month on energy drinks and I never really thought about it until reading this. That's $2,400 a year on something that's probably terrible for me. Even if this product is half as good as claimed, it's worth a shot just financially.

Interesting read. I'm a nutritionist and I will say the fruiting body vs. mycelium distinction is legitimate and something most consumers don't know about. Whether a pouch is the best delivery method is another question, but the ingredient quality claims check out if they're being honest about sourcing.

Appreciate the professional perspective. Would you recommend mushroom supplements in general for focus/energy or is the evidence still too thin?
